Kranwerke Mannheim

A story of success(ion)

Securing a company’s future is a pivotal undertaking for any business owner. In many cases however, the question of succession doesn’t always have easy answer. For Mannheim, Germany-based crane builder KW-Kranwerke AG (KWM), carving a path towards a sustainable and profitable future included the search for a suitable investor. Faced with difficulties after taking on several large projects outside of their specialist field, the company’s main shareholder sold his shares to Nimbus in January 2019. With a capital injection and strategic involvement, Nimbus aims to help KWM with this new chapter in its history; strengthening its market position and expanding its service and retrofit areas.

With about 90 employees in its workforce, KWM enjoys (among others) a solid market position in the design and manufacture of overhead cranes for customers in the waste-to-energy (WTE) and substitute fuels (EBS) markets. KWM’s highly specialized crane systems can be found in a wide range of environments, such as municipal waste incinerators, ports and dredging pontoons. The company’s service portfolio includes new plant construction, equipment servicing (including the sale of spare parts) and retrofitting; the modernization of existing crane systems currently in operation. Already providing these services to a substantial customer base, KWM’s singular knowledge and expertise offer considerable potential for international expansion.

Offering broad experience in the market for special machine construction, Nimbus is in a unique position to support KWM in achieving its re-aligned strategic goals of business optimization and growth. The market for crane modernization and modification in particular has tremendous potential in key European regions in which KWM offers a strong track record. Additional potential – especially for new machine installation – is seen in Asian countries that heavily invest in the area of waste-to-energy and related markets. With strengthened sales power, a streamlined organization and a clean balance sheet, KWM now has the means to systematically expand its core business. Together with Nimbus, the German crane builder intends to break new ground in auspicious (foreign) markets. An uplifting result for the company’s succession plan.
